PRTG Network Monitoring

PRTG from Paessler is a well-designed network monitoring platform. We like it not only because it is robust but because it:

  • Allows us to extend its functionality with custom-developed monitors, making it possible to monitor not just hardware but almost any conceivable application metric.
  • Uses a web interface that makes customized dashboards possible, including dashboards that can be hosted by Stratelogics.

Here is a sampling of the type of monitoring that can be performed with PRTG technology:

Ping PINGs are used to check whether a device is reachable through the network.
Port Tries to connect to the specified TCP/IP port number of a device and waits for the request to be accepted.
NTP Monitors an NTP server (Network Time Protocol)
HTTP Monitors a web server using one or more techniques including:
  • Verifiying page loading (website availability)
  • Performing test transactions (checking shopping cart functionality)
  • Verifying page loading or file download times from multiple worldwide locations
FTP Monitors FTP servers (File Transfer Protocol) and FTPS servers (FTP over SSL)
TFTP Monitors a TFTP server (Trivial FTP)
DNS Monitors a DNS server (Domain Name Service)
WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation)

Monitors a wide range of measurements on Windows servers such as:

  • CPU load
  • Available memory
  • Uptime

  • Pagefile usage
  • Free disk space
  • Windows event log entries
MS SQL Server Monitors metrics such as open connections, deadlocks or custom application metrics
MS Exchange Monitors key metrics of an MS Exchange Server

SMTP Monitors a mail server using SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol). Can optionally send a test email with every check.
LDAP Monitors LDAP directory services (e.g. Active Directory, OpenLDAP, etc.)

SMTP&POP3 Round Trip Sends an email to the parent device using SMTP and then checks a POP3 mailbox until the email comes in.

SNMP Traffic Monitors bandwidth and traffic on servers, PCs, switches, etc. using SNMP
SNMP Library Monitors Cisco interfaces and queue, Dell systems and storages, APC UPS (battery ems status), etc.

  • Application starts and stops
  • Failed logins
  • Unhandled exceptions
  • Heartbeat monitoring
  • Authentication ticket expirations
